Tri-County Regional Planning Commission

This project is working to extend the Rock Island Trail to the Quad Cities and Bloomington-Normal.

In 2007, TCRPC announced a study to explore extending the Rock Island State Trail.  The Illinois Department of Natural Resources funded the study, with the goal of extending the existing Rock Island State Trail to the northwest to connect with the Grand Illinois Trail and the Quad Cities, and to the southeast to connect with the Route 66 Trail and Bloomington-Normal.

The study has identified a general corridor, a preferred final off-road route, and interim on-road routing options.   Collaborating partners in the project include:

  • League of Illinois Bicyclists
  • Illinois Department of Natural Resources
  • Illinois Department of Transportation
  • Heartland Partnership
  • Stark County Economic Development
  • Bi-State Regional Planning Commission
  • McLean County Regional Planning Commission
  • McLean County Highway Department

Currently, the IDNR is working to secure funds that will be used to develop a route booklet that will show trail users the designated route.  TCRPC is overseeing the project, and the League of Illinois Bicyclists will develop the rider's guide.
