Tazewell County Small Wind Energy Systems Ordinance

As wind farms and an interest in renewable energy become more prevalent in Central Illinois, so too does interest in small wind energy systems. A small wind energy system, which consists of a single wind turbine, single tower, and associated electronics, generates power for an individual property. These systems can be connected to the existing electricity grid, so in addition to utilizing cleaner energy, system owners can reduce monthly energy bills.
When property owners in Tazewell County expressed interest in installing small wind energy systems, the County decided to prepare an ordinance in order to allow use of these systems and mitigate their impacts. TCRPC staff was enlisted to collect examples of similar ordinances from around the country and research the small wind energy industry to devise appropriate language and recommendations. Working with County staff and the County Zoning Board of Appeals, TCRPC drafted and modified an ordinance that was approved by the County Board. This ordinance now regulates small wind energy systems in Tazewell County, ensuring public safety while benefiting consumers and the environment.
